Common Vaping Problems and How to Fix Them

Just like any other electronic device, e-cigarettes can and do go wrong. What should you do when this happens - throw away your vaping device and buy a new one? If you don't have much of a problem with your vape pen, it's a potential waste of money -- and you're also potentially contributing unnecessarily to trash and recycling bins. 

While e-cigarettes have several components -- battery, processing unit, fuel tank, mouthpiece, and possibly an ignition button and LED indicators -- they're not that complicated. So when they stop working, or you can't or aren't sure how to fix some obvious glitch, you can usually fix it. 

You can of course take your vape to your local vape shop so they can advise you and possibly fix any issues -- but you can always try it yourself first. Maybe you are new to vaping and just wondering how to turn on the vape. Let's take a look at some common problems with e-cigarettes and how to fix them. 

"Why won't my e-cigarette turn on?" you ask yourself as you struggle to understand the shiny new device out of the box. Have you tried charging? Many electronic devices with built-in batteries carry only a small or residual charge, and this charge decreases over time as the product moves through the manufacturing, distribution, and sale process. 

Before using the e-cigarette, please fully charge it. This will take different times depending on the make and model, so please refer to the instructions included or available on the manufacturer's website. Some e-cigarettes recharge within an hour. Others may take longer, depending on the size and type, and specification of the battery. 

You might also be wondering why your vape battery won't charge even though you've plugged it into a USB or other connection to power it. If so, check to make sure it is properly seated in the device and that there are no dust particles between the connectors. 

If you have a second battery -- sometimes vapes are sold with two, so you can swap out one when it runs out -- try it with the vape to see if it powers the vape. If so, the other vape battery isn't working and is probably a dud. Never try to pry open the battery itself thinking you can fix it, as doing so can be dangerous. 

Another factor to consider if your vape battery isn't charging is the charging cable. It may be defective, such as a broken wire, or one of the four wires may not be properly connected to one or both ends. If you have a spare USB cable and it works for your vape, try it out and see if your vape starts charging. If so, you can tell the seller that your vape pen is unusable after charging due to a faulty USB cable and they will give you a new one.

First, check that there is enough charge in the battery to heat the e-liquid in the tank and let the vaping process continue -- you can determine the battery charge by the LED on the vape. If it's low, charge it up and you should be fine. However, if there is enough charge left in the battery, check the fuel tank and see how much e-liquid you have left, topping up if necessary.

If your vape doesn't produce steam, another thing to look out for is the connection between the tank and the device -- and the coil inside the tank. Make sure all parts are positioned and connected correctly -- and that there is no residue or dirt buildup between them. Regardless, it pays to quickly clean all connection spaces with a cloth (or cotton swab), as spills can occur during refill and use, and you may not notice they've built up between the vital connection areas of the vape. 

This may seem obvious, but many people wonder how to turn on an e-cigarette when they first get their hands on it, especially for newbies. E-cigarettes haven't been around for long, so it's no surprise that it takes a while to get used to this new technology, allowing you to enjoy the great flavors and hits of nicotine. 

The simple answer to troubleshooting this vape pen is that it depends on what type of pen it is. Some are suction activated, which means you simply pump or inhale on the mouthpiece. Others start at the touch of a button -- how many times depends on the model, though it's usually between 3 and 5. As always, refer to the manufacturer's instructions, and if in doubt, ask your vape shop how to do it so it doesn't hurt you and damage your vape pen. 

Another common vaping problem is that your vaping liquid suddenly lacks flavor -- or the flavor seems diluted or disappearing, and you're not getting as much. Or, you may get a burnt taste from your e-cigarette. In both cases, you're almost certainly running low on vape juice and you'll need to top it up -- especially if you notice a burnt taste, as the coils may no longer soak or even get covered with vape juice and are burning. 

One reason for losing the flavor of e-liquid is a condition called vaper tongue, which can be caused by too much vaping and overloaded taste buds. So it might be worth cutting back on your vaping temporarily, or changing the flavor to give your teeth something different. And make sure to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, as steam can dry out your mouth.
